Week 13 college football picks … Stop the madness! Just let Bama win

Alabama fan rageLast week, an Auburn fan was shot by an Alabama fan after an argument over which football team is better this season (the two teams play each other Saturday in the Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala.).

Let’s go over that again: An Alabama fan shot the fan of another team because he felt compelled to defend his football team’s honor.

An aberration for an Alabama fan? Perhaps. And perhaps not.

Week 12 college football picks … stop picking on me!

picks college footballOn paper,  this week should be the easiest week to pick college football games. Way too many top teams playing weaker opponents, including Alabama (just a little rat poison there).

The Citadel at Clemson, Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn, Michigan at Wisconsin … it’s pathetic, really.

On with the picks …

Week 11 college football picks … them’s fightin’ words

fan fight college football picks Week 11Early warning to be prepared for some knockdown, dragged-out fights this weekend.

Notre Dame-Miami, Georgia-Auburn, Clemson-Florida State … yeah, those are big games. But I’m talking about the altercations involving fans. If this Saturday is anything like last Saturday, well, now we’re really talking “Bedlam.”

Week 10 college football picks … again with the ‘poison,’ Nick?

College football picks Saban poisonSo last week Jim McElwain claims his Florida players and coaches were receiving death threats, which were never substantiated by the university. By Sunday, he was no longer the Gators’ head coach.

This week Alabama coach Nick Saban is once again saying his players are being fed  “poison” by the media. And … nothing! Yeah, that’s right. … He’s still the head coach.

At his weekly press conference on Monday, Saban was clear: “If our players think anything of (the college football playoff poll), then that could be an issue. These are the things we try to categorize as the poison that you really don’t want your players to be focused on.”

I say, “Double standard!” Perhaps Alabama needs to consider a Saban buyout.

But seriously, though, if McElwain beats Georgia on Saturday — instead of being worked, 42-7 — no doubt Florida officials would conveniently excuse the phantom death threats. As the saying goes: Winning cures all ills … including outrageous public claims and doses of “poison.”

On with the picks …

Week 9 college football picks … this time with an important message

via GIPHY

Another tough week of picking games, but I’m still not going to start thinking about them. It wouldn’t be worth it, despite the advice I received from NBA superstar Michael Jordan.

I’m still not going to think about it, even though I’ve dropped to 77 percent success rate.

Week 8 college football picks … it’s bad, but not bringing in Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick, Mike McCarthy, college football picksIt’s time to pick, again without thinking. Took a beating last week just like everyone else. But I’ve invested a lot of time into this, at least 3-5 minutes this month. So, I’m not giving up.

Already heading into Week 8, I’m still at 78 percent. That’s not horrible.

So no matter what anyone thinks, I’m not bringing in Colin Kaepernick to make my picks this week, OK? Did you read that?? I can still make it through the rest of the season without bringing in someone else.

Week 3 college football picks … ‘Here on the field … and up close’

“Coach, it sure is a pleasure to be here with you guys … here on the field … and up close … just watching … Coach Vance Joseph …”

Leave Sergio alone. That’s exactly how he was trained at ESPN. Just talk into the microphone and try not to think. And THAT’s what not thinking looks like.

Just imagine — that’s my brain functioning as I make these college football picks.  Just like Sergio Dipp.

Last Chance Update: De’Andre Johnson struggling at FAU

Last Chance U De'Andre Johnson
(Netflix)

Arguably the most pleasant surprise of season 2 of the Netflix series “Last Chance U” was Florida State transfer and quarterback De’Andre Johnson.

Johnson appeared to show genuine remorse for his past actions (he punched a woman at a bar and was kicked out of Florida State), leadership skills, ability to be a team player and to be a fantastic athlete. He proved he was as good, if not better than East Mississippi predecessors Jonathan Franklin III (Auburn), Chad Kelly (Ole Miss), and Bo Wallace (Ole Miss).

But despite that, he landed no Power 5 scholarship. He accepted an offer to play for Florida Atlantic. And as preseason camp begins, the disappointments are continuing.

Tuesday headlines: Robbery no small thing for Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes
What up, Mahomes?

Patrick Mahomes, the 6-foot-3 former Texas Tech and current Kansas City quarterback, was robbed on Friday outside a Texas home by a 5-foot-4 man.

As TMZ.com put it, Mahomes was robbed by “a tiny man.”

According to the Associated Press, Mahomes and the three other people were stepping from a vehicle on a home’s driveway outside Tyler, Texas, when a suspect approached. He gestured he had a handgun in his waistband and took unspecified items from the victims before speeding away, the Smith County (Texas) Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Weekend football fix: Lane Kiffin, the man and his music

Name tags might have helped Lane Kiffin at Alabama

Lane Kiffin was heard from again this week and, yes, it was about how different things are at Florida Atlantic than at Alabama (Really? Who would have expected that?).

Except this time he wasn’t taking shots at his former boss, Nick Saban. Well, not directly.

Kiffin was on Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly and mentioned two noteworthy observations:

(On Alabama’s support staff) “I was there three years, and I still didn’t learn everybody’s name in that building. There were so many people. There’s somebody for everything.”
