So last week Jim McElwain claims his Florida players and coaches were receiving death threats, which were never substantiated by the university. By Sunday, he was no longer the Gators’ head coach.
This week Alabama coach Nick Saban is once again saying his players are being fed “poison” by the media. And … nothing! Yeah, that’s right. … He’s still the head coach.
At his weekly press conference on Monday, Saban was clear: “If our players think anything of (the college football playoff poll), then that could be an issue. These are the things we try to categorize as the poison that you really don’t want your players to be focused on.”
I say, “Double standard!” Perhaps Alabama needs to consider a Saban buyout.
But seriously, though, if McElwain beats Georgia on Saturday — instead of being worked, 42-7 — no doubt Florida officials would conveniently excuse the phantom death threats. As the saying goes: Winning cures all ills … including outrageous public claims and doses of “poison.”
On with the picks …
Get to pickin’
Here are my picks for Week 10, again, without even thinking:
Clemson at N.C. State: 38-35, Clemson. A victory for the Tigers fresh off a College Football Playoff, Top-4 selection.
Virginia Tech at Miami: 34-28, Miami. Picking the Hurricanes solely because they’re at home.
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State: 42-38, Oklahoma State. Again, the home-game thing.
Iowa State at West Virginia: 35-31, Iowa State. Hard to argue against ISU with the way Cyclones are playing.
Penn State at Michigan State: 45-10, Penn State. Nittany Lions will want to quickly erase last weekend’s loss.
Ohio State at Iowa: 27-21, Ohio State. Buckeyes seem to be in a rhythm now.
Stanford at Washington State: 45-41, Washington State. Winner of this game keeps Pac-12 North title hopes alive.
Arizona at USC: 38-31, Arizona. QB Khalil Tate has made a huge difference for the Wildcats.
Auburn at Texas A&M: 35-14, Auburn. Just don’t know what to expect from either of these teams, but Tigers coming off a bye week should be healthier.
South Carolina at Georgia: 35-17, Georgia. Bulldogs not slowing down.
LSU at Alabama: 49-10, Alabama. So what that it’s No. 2 in the CFP poll, Alabama will do what Alabama does.
Now here’s some really fast, no-thinking picks, winners only:
Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Wisconsin, Purdue, Maryland, Northwestern, Michigan …
Washington, Cal, Arizona State, Utah, Mississippi State, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tennessee, Navy, Memphis, Houston, South Florida, Tulane, Central Florida …
Florida Atlantic, UAB, Old Dominion, Florida International, Middle Tennessee, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Air Force, Utah State, UNLV, Boise State, Wyoming, Fresno State, Troy, Appalachian State, Georgia State, New Mexico State, South Alabama.
Not thinking last week: 33-19 (63 percent)
Not thinking for the season: 422-133 (76 percent)
