SEC Media Days: Most noticeable absences for next week

SEC Media Days
SEC Media Days start Monday

The SEC announced an updated schedule for next week’s Media Days in Birmingham, Ala. Couldn’t help but notice some big names are missing.

For instance, no Arden Key from LSU. Arguably the SEC’s top returning defensive player and likely a top-5 pick for the 2018 NFL Draft.

Yeah, it’s understood that he took time off from the program and then returned this summer. Keeping him away from Birmingham is likely a move to actually keep him away from questions regarding his absence. But still.

Also,  Key’s teammate Danny Etling, LSU’s quarterback, won’t be there either.

No Hurts here

Oh, and the 2016 SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, won’t be there. Understood that some coaches, like Nick Saban, feel the appearance at Media Days should be reserved for upperclassmen. I respect that, but, again, it’s 2016 SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

Whatevs, Nick.

Ole Miss sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson and South Carolina sophomore quarterback Jake Bentley can represent the underclassmen.

Auburn’s newest — and much-talked-about — quarterback Jarrett Stidham will stay behind, but kicker Daniel Carlson. Normally that move would deserve a grave amount of criticism, but Carlson, a Lou Groza Award finalist, is possibly the Tigers’ most reliable scoring threat. He deserves the trip.
